In 2023, Davey Mitigation restored soil, water, and vegetation quality at a former cattle grazing site through wetland enhancements and creation.

The Poorhouse wetland restoration site sits on former pastureland used for cattle grazing and other agricultural practices. Located in Rice, Virginia, the Poorhouse restoration site is 64 acres.

The Challenge

The Poorhouse site has been severely impacted by years of agricultural use, which has damaged the wetlands on the property by disrupting the quality of soil, water, and vegetation.

Davey Mitigation helped improve the water and land quality of these wetlands by restoring and creating areas that mimic high-functioning wetland ecosystems.

The Solution

In 2023, the Mitigation team created shallow depressions in the land, allowing it to be flooded by a tributary running through the property to create additional wetlands. To enhance existing wetlands, the Mitigation team managed invasive plant species on-site and planted a native seed mix, as well as native shrubs and trees.

Once completed, the project created 15.39 acres of wetlands, enhanced 36.84 acres of wetlands, and preserved 5 acres of uplands.

The Results

The Poorhouse mitigation site was developed as part of a permittee-responsible mitigation project to fulfill a compensatory mitigation requirement associated with a quarry project in Petersburg, VA.

The mitigation site yielded a total of 29.85 wetland credits.
